It was purchased as a weekend home but quickly became much more as my parents poured their hearts and souls into restoring the property to its original state. Along the way, they fell in love with collecting antiques and preserving the rich history of the farm.
For 23 years, my mother Sandy and late father, Duane, transformed the 19th century, crumbling farm into a gathering place for their family and friends that rivaled no other. Their eye for detail and love for the natural surroundings enabled them to retain the charm and grace of the estate.
In 1996, my father Duane passed away rather suddenly and his wish was to rest on the property which he adored. Our family’s goal was to create a family cemetery on our farm but the county initially denied us that option. Soon after, a rumor spread that what we needed to gain approval for our cemetery was to have a church on site. It wasn’t long before a knock came to the door and a member of a neighboring church, St. John’s, told us their country church needed a home. The congregation had built a new church and could no longer afford to keep up the old one. Their suggestion was to “take the church and answer all our prayers”.
Our dream was becoming a reality and the county ultimately issued us a permit for our family cemetery. We moved St. John’s church to Oak Hill and placed my father in his final resting ground. My husband Doug and I were the first to be married in the newly restored church and from there we’ve invited many to share in our joy and experience Oak Hill for themselves. The Old HomeStead Event Barn
The Old Homestead Event Barn sits on 5 acres which offers a setting to host a wedding ceremony and a reception. A large pond sits on the south end of the property that is teeming with hundreds of goldfish, a John Deere tractor fountain, and 30 newer established trees and bushes. The ceremony area now has a gazebo with barn beam benches and sliding barn doors at the entrance. The farmhouse is part of the rented venue giving parties the sunroom, kitchen, and bathroom to prepare for weddings. The barn is located to the North of the house. With 5,000 square feet, the ceiling is draped with material and outfitted with 12 chandeliers plus cafe-style lights leading out under the awning and over the driveway for romantic evenings. It is a seasonal place open from March to November but can be toured in any month. The comfort of heat can be added with rented propane heaters. Two bathrooms are located inside the barn with modern conveniences.

We here at Engelbrecht Farm believe in a true family and friends wedding. Where both sides of the new to be family, and their friends come together can have a celebration of love and life. Engelbrecht Farm allows you the time and the ability to do your own decorating, set-up, and catering. Imagine your creative enjoyment decorating your own barn wedding with your family and friends. However, if you prefer, we do have a list of several great decorators and caterers in the area that can bring your dream day to reality.
You will have the full farmstead wedding utilizing several of the structures. The house can be the core family retreat area but is intended for the bridal party to prepare themselves. In addition, the three bedrooms can handle overnight guests and a modern kitchen for you to prepare private meals.
The Barn is the largest in the area with 4,500 square feet under the roofs. Adjacent to the barn is the old concrete feedlot which covers 4,000 square feet which can be covered with a tent or left open for a true outdoor barn wedding. The floors in the barn are concrete with the second floor being wood. Also, other areas of the property may be explored and used as photography backdrops. You can even schedule to have your engagement photos taken once the wedding booking has been made.
The barn is split up into three major areas. The loafing shed is open on one end with a capacity of 140. The main part of the barn is split into the ground level and hayloft. The ground level can seat 150 people and 72 people can sit in the barn’s hayloft which overlooks the ground level. A tent can be placed on the concrete adjacent to the barn or in the south pasture next to the barn. Please keep in mind that these are average figures. Your final maximum attendance will be dependent on your particular layout.
Small event vehicle parking is available in the rock driveways. Large event vehicle parking is available in the grass parking lot within the farmstead.

For owners, Troy and Michelle Harms, their farmstead wedding and reception business is a dream realized. The farm has been in Troy’s family for generations, but after the passing of Uncle Joe Vance in 1990, it fell into disrepair. This did not stop Michelle from dreaming of a farm wedding.
