the calkins barn on the property is of new construction and has become a unique venue for family events, meetings and retreats. the annual grant wood scenic byway stakeholders meeting was held in the barn last fall and brought first time visitors to the modern facility. it brings a whole new meaning to what a “barn” should be.
The upstairs room has tables and chairs for approximately 350 people. Two of the tables are 60” round tables, 28 tables are 30” x 96” tables. (You can fit 10 people at the table without sitting at the ends.) The Basement has 21 tables and chairs for an additional 100 more. The kitchen includes two full-size refrigerators (one with freezer on top), 2 stoves, a microwave, and 1-three compartment sink. The upstairs bar has one refrigerator with a freezer on top and a bar sink. The basement has a stove, microwave, and refrigerator with a freezer on top.
The parking lot is south of the barn across the street. Handicap parking and drop-off are on the west side of the barn.

Running along the edge of Brophy Creek, the farm was purchased in the 1950’s by my grandfather who immigrated from Germany and worked the farm as a hired man when he was 18 years old. The next generation took over and my dad began farming the land. My husband and I moved into the farmhouse where we raised our 4 beautiful children. I’ve stayed on this acreage my entire life. It is my history.
Eventually, my dad retired and the buildings began to deteriorate. I knew we had to save these historic buildings and share them with the community, so we got creative and dreamed up the wedding and event venue that Brophy Creek is today.
Luckily, my husband is able to take the dreams and visions I have in my head and make them a reality. In 2015 we began dreaming it up, tearing it apart, and rebuilding – we’ve put our lives into this space. Thankfully God kept opening doors to allow us to continue and we held our 1st wedding in August 2016. old brick
Erected in 1856, Old Brick is the second oldest building in Iowa City. Originally built and used as North Presbyterian Church, it is one of the few surviving local structures dating from the Civil War or earlier.
Old Brick stands tall as a historic treasure and has been described as Iowa City’s “crown jewel of historic preservation”. In 1973, the National Park Service placed it on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is Iowa City Historic Landmark Number 10.
In 1997, Old Brick’s Renaissance began with repayment of a loan, a restoration grant, an architectural plan to guide restoration efforts, a session to develop a vision of Old Brick for the 21st Century, organization of a Community Advisory Council, applications for a series of restoration grants, and development of a website.
Thanks to over 3,400 hours of volunteer labor and the generosity of many vendors, Old Brick now has completely remodeled kitchen; a refinished entryway, stairs, and upper hallway and brand new windows in the office wing; a new hardwood floor and new entry doors into a repainted Hall; a dressing room for weddings; new tables and chairs for renters; new exterior landscaping; new flooring in the from entryway; and thanks to Old Brick Dance Club and Thrivent, additional airconditioning in the Hall.
With grants from the State Historic Society of Iowa, loans from Community Development Block Grant funds, and usage revenue, Old Brick has installed new gutters, soffits, and downspouts; repaired and repainted exterior window trim; installed a chairlift for accessibility to the Hall; rebuilt a restroom for handicapped accessibility; and installed a new speaker system in the Hall.
A major repointing project was completed in 2006 that involved cleaning the building’s brick exterior, replacing mortar and damaged bricks and rebuilding the chimney. This project was financed with an $86,900 grant from the State Historical Society, a Community Development Block Grant loan of $50,000 and a matching $50,000 raised by the Old Brick Foundation and the Old Brick Board from businesses and individuals.

We didn’t originally plan to build a wedding & event venue but here we are with one of the top Iowa Barn Wedding Venues! We have been blessed by everyone who helped bring this idea to life and by the 100’s of events we have been able to host over the first few years!
I grew up on a working farm in central Iowa and my career allowed me to work throughout the Midwest for some top companies. When my latest position was being relocated, I felt in my heart it was time to return to Iowa and be closer to my parents and family, unfortunately, Iowa was never the best location for my career.
I had 3 nieces from Waukee who had recently gotten married and each had struggled to find a venue to fit their needs: one was too small, one had 2 levels which grandparents struggled with, none would hold 400 guests.
So I set out on finding the perfect property to build my Wedding & Event Venue! The minute I drove onto this property, I could “see it”: a beautiful drive up the lane, photo opportunities everywhere, and when you drive out of the trees….a beautiful Lodge-style venue ready to WOW guests!! We found the most amazing Amish crew to bring my vision come to life with many local contractors used in the building process. We were able to mill a 132-year-old white oak tree from my family’s Century Farm for the mantle, 22’ gorgeous live-edge bar top, and an 11’ table in the bride’s room! All are stunning and bring a little “home” to the venue.
We are a small team: Kendra had the vision to build the venue and manages the sales and marketing for the business. Her nephew Austin is the property manager and takes care of everything outdoors and inside the building…no small task! Molly just joined our team and will help manage many of our events. We have a team of part-time bartenders who have been with us from the start. They consider this their “fun” job and do a great job taking care of our guests!
We believe it’s important you understand how we came to work with couples who have chosen us to host their wedding. we host weddings and celebrations because we love sharing the Lodge with couples who love it too.

We didn’t originally plan to build a wedding & event venue but here we are with one of the top Iowa Barn Wedding Venues! We have been blessed by everyone who helped bring this idea to life and by the 100’s of events we have been able to host over the first few years!
I grew up on a working farm in central Iowa and my career allowed me to work throughout the Midwest for some top companies. When my latest position was being relocated, I felt in my heart it was time to return to Iowa and be closer to my parents and family, unfortunately Iowa was never the best location for my career.
I had 3 nieces from Waukee who had recently gotten married and each had struggled to find a venue to fit their needs: one was too small, one had 2 levels which grandparents struggled with, none would hold 400 guests.
So I set out on finding the perfect property to build my Wedding & Event Venue! The minute I drove onto this property, I could “see it”: a beautiful drive up the lane, photo opportunities everywhere, and when you drive out of the trees….a beautiful Lodge-style venue ready to WOW guests!! We found the most amazing Amish crew to bring my vision come to life with many local contractors used in the building process. We were able to mill a 132 year old white oak tree from my family’s Century Farm for the mantle, 22’ gorgeous live-edge bar top and a 11’ table in the bride’s room! All are stunning and bring a little “home” to the venue.
We are a small team: Kendra had the vision to build the venue and manages the sales and marketing for the business. Her nephew Austin is the property manager and takes care of everything outdoors and inside the building…no small task! Molly just joined our team and will help manage many of our events. We have a team of part-time bartenders who have been with us from the start. They consider this their “fun” job and do a great job taking care of our guests!
We believe it’s important you understand how we came to work with couples who have chosen us to host their wedding. we host weddings and celebrations because we love sharing the Lodge with couples who love it too.

The Stonehaven Barn is a beautiful and unique country-setting venue in De Soto, Iowa, and is the perfect, relaxing location for your next wedding & reception, company retreat or family reunion. This restored 1920’s barn has 3,000 plus square feet of floor space with a wet bar and loft space to accommodate a band and/or speaker. With 12 Smith & Hawken wood tables, there is dining or business meeting seating for 110. Additionally, inside the barn there are “his” and “hers” restrooms.
On the Stonehaven Barn Grounds, there is an outdoor kitchen area with two large gas grills, a wet bar and two buffet-like cement islands. There are also picnic tables scattered around the complex for additional outdoor seating. An adjacent courtyard-like area is perfect for additional seating or use with a 30 x 40 tent.

Originally a Century Farm that once served as a Brown Swiss Cattle operation, Carly & Aaron purchased the acreage in June of 2015. The acreage included two barns on nearly 8 acres. Initially, Aaron wanted to tear down the Reception Barn but Carly’s love for old barns wouldn’t let him.
That February, Aaron proposed to Carly. As they started to discuss wedding plans, they knew they wanted to get married on their acreage that fall. As planning continued, the idea came about to use the Reception Barn for their ceremony. With that idea, the couple got to work.
6 months, and countless man-hours later, the couple had their wedding and got married in the barn. After the wedding, they resumed their normal lives while the barn sat empty. Then one day, while going through wedding photos and recounting the fun they had at their wedding, an idea came about. Why not let others enjoy their wedding in the barn as much as Aaron and Carly did? From there, Swiss Acres was born.

the old fifty-six barn
The Old Fifty-Six is a distinguished landmark barn that was built in 1907 and served for years as the Worthwhile Frost Dairy Farm. It has dowel or wooden pin-type construction on the upper beams and cross members. It has post and beam construction. The silo was constructed after the top window and roofed structure were completed. This beautiful barn makes the list of historic barns of Iowa and is part of the Iowa Barn Foundation.
The previous owners of the property decided in the 2000s to restore this beautiful historic barn back into something special. They wanted to share the barn’s charm and beauty with the community. While cleaning up the barn one day, getting it ready for what it is today, they found hung way up high on a beam a cow tag with the number 56 on it. This appeared to be the only thing in the barn at the time that had a purpose and with that The Old 56 Dairy was born. With the transition to new ownership in 2016, the name was transitioned to The Old Fifty-Six: barn weddings + events to more accurately describe its current role in the community.

happy apple celebrations
Happy Apple Orchard was started in the early 1970s. The original 2 dozen trees, that were planted on the farm, came from K-mart on Hickman Rd. They were an end-of-the-season close-out price, that Rick Motzko purchased while delivering landscape stone to their garden department. The trees were labeled dwarf Red and Golden Delicious; although they all turned out to be standard size, MacIntosh apple trees. Rick thought this would be a good thing for his dad, Dick, who had just purchased a farm near Cumming. Dick, together with his wife Audrey and son Rick, planted and nurtured more and more apple trees, year after year until the orchard numbered more than 4000 trees.
Dick and Audrey owned and operated the orchard until 1989, at which time they sold it to Rick and me (his wife, Sue). We, along with our six kids, all worked and grew the business. During the 1990s, we sold our apples to all the Dahl’s grocery stores around the Des Moines area, had apples at most of the local farmer’s markets, and sold apples right at the farm Dick and Audrey continued to help, and direct until they passed. They are greatly missed still. In 1999, due to an agricultural over-spray from a neighboring farm field (while the trees were in full blossom), over half the trees died and had to be removed. Rick and I continued to sell apples, although at a much smaller scale. The kids all graduated went off to college or vocational training to begin their own lives.
After attending a few close friends and family weddings, and experiencing the stress of our own children’s weddings and receptions… we had the hair-brained idea to start hosting weddings and events at Happy Apple! So, in 2009 we phased out the apple business and began hosting weddings full-time. One of the major difficulties we saw at other wedding venues was the short time allotted to each wedding party for the rental of the facilities. We wanted our hosting parties to have a full weekend available for their special occasions. This allows wedding parties to come and decorate before the event, to truly experience the ceremony and enjoy the reception with their guests, and to pick up the facility at a calmer time the following day. Rick, I, or trained staff work fully and individually with the hosting parties and are available throughout the event. We believe this makes Happy Apple uniques and as relaxed and as a wedding can be!

As the name would suggest, the Farmhouse was built in 1868 and is one of the oldest farmhouses in Boone County. “Mom and Dad, we’re getting married!” My husband Tim and I heard this joyous news not once, but twice in January 2015. Our oldest son, Dakota, and his girl Allison; and our oldest daughter McKenna, and her guy Justin both got engaged and thought it would be incredible to get married on our farm, which has been in our family for seven generations. We had had the idea to restore the old 1915 barn for years, but it had just never made it to the top of the “To Do” list. NOW, my husband had the motivation! And since it was the 100 year anniversary of the barn being built, it was the perfect year to breathe new life into the structure. For our family, it was the summer of all summers for weddings! In addition to our own kids, a cousin of ours and her fiancé chose to celebrate their special day at the old family barn as well.
The first wedding, McKenna and Justin’s, took place on August 15, 2015, with barely enough time to get the floors swept and lights hung in time for the ceremony. It was a 94-degree day, but it was elegant, beautiful, and perfect. The third wedding, Dakota and Allison’s happened on October 10, 2015 – the exact day of their 6th anniversary of being together. We lucked out on the weather that day as well – breezy, but sunny and warm. They chose to have an outdoor ceremony, overlooking the pond behind the barn, and then all the festivities happened in the barn afterward. The barn was a bit more polished by then, with actual bathrooms and everything! After all the fun and excitement we had this year celebrating such happy occasions with our family, we decided to offer our treasured barn as a venue so everyone can enjoy it. Tim has been keeping it rustic and unique, with lots of old family memorabilia and a wall for all the new brides and grooms to carve their names and wedding dates into. We have had lots of help and support from family, neighbors, and friends, and wish to thank each and every one of them for putting their time, energy, and love into the old family barn! Warren & Sara Brackey, owners, hosted their oldest daughter’s wedding on their own farm in 2015. After all the hard work was done and the acreage never looked better, they jokingly asked, “Who else wants to get married?” Sara continued browsing more outdoor wedding ideas on Pinterest, and when they drove by a beautiful acreage close to their home, they thought it would be the perfect location for an outdoor wedding venue. Not only is it surrounded by fields and windmills, but it’s on a hard surface road only 5 miles from the Diamond Jo Casino & hotels.
Sara & Warren officially took ownership of the property in the Spring of 2017 and began transforming it into Country View Acres. The transformation included digging a pond, making changing rooms out of the 2 bins on-site, paving a gravel walkway to the ceremony sites, and polishing up the existing machine shed with cement additions to the north and south ends, new siding, an entryway with bathrooms on each side, a storage room, and the bar area with kitchenette. Plus they put in custom barn doors for a rustic finish, tons of windows and doors on the north end (including a glass garage door in the center), and a large patio where guests can enjoy gorgeous views in every direction. In addition to the 2-acre pond, there are over 10 acres of established oak trees that not only look great in pictures but provide the right amount of shade and wind block during wedding ceremonies.
Several improvements were made throughout 2018, but the full insulation and air conditioning weren’t added until 2019. CVA has hosted weddings with guest lists that range from 200-460 in addition to company get-togethers and holiday parties. When my husband and I met we wanted our wedding in a barn, we couldn’t find our acreage in time for our set date and ended up at a friend’s acreage. We continued our search for the acreage we wanted and finally found it. On this acreage are our two 1940 barns with no intention of a venue. We had a family member’s wedding in the one barn and it turned out beautiful, a few years went by, and had another couple approach us about renting our barn for another wedding. This came to our attention that we should renovate our barns to become one of the best iowa barn wedding venues in the area, and the adventure began.
