Muscatine began as a trading post founded by representatives of Colonel George Davenport in 1833. A German immigrant named J.F. Boepple founded a pearl button company here, and button making became so central to the town that Pearl of the Mississippi stuck. Two of its historic districts, Downtown and West Hill, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
