Marion was the first seat of Linn County before the courthouse moved to Cedar Rapids in 1919, and it was named for Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War hero known as the Swamp Fox. The annual Swamp Fox Festival still honors him. The city grew from 26,294 people in 2000 to 41,535 in 2020, a 58 percent jump, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Iowa.
